Bilingual-Bicultural Minors

Effective Winter Semester 2007 students must successfully complete the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).  Students must score at the Superior level in a non-English language.  Students in the Post-Bachelor or Master of Arts in Teaching Programs must meet this requirement prior to admission to the Teacher Certification Program. Undergraduate students must meet this requirement prior to registering for courses in the BBE minor. Advisor approval is required to take the OPI and WPT.

Description

The Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) measures how well a person spontaneously writes in a language.  The test is timed for 80 minutes, and consists of four to five requests for written responses dealing with practical, social, and/or professional topics that are encountered in informal or formal contexts.  The tasks and prompts are written in English with the expectation that the responses be written in the target language.

How to schedule an exam

The WPT can be taken with an in person proctor at a test center, or via a web-based administration using a remote proctor.  Students testing for WSU College of Education programs must have permission to test from their academic advisor before scheduling the exam.  The WPT must be scheduled a minimum of ten business days in advance of the test date.

  1. To test at WSU Testing, Evaluation and Research Services, call our office at 313-577-3400 to schedule.  All testing is done by pre-arranged individual appointment.  Appointments are available Monday through Friday during regular business hours.  The $30.00 service fee is payable when the testing appointment is scheduled.  Please do not submit an online application for the WPT before you have confirmed test date(s) with Testing, Evaluation and Research Services.

  2. For web-based proctoring Wayne State University utilizes Lanuguage Testing International. Follow the directions to schedule your exam.  Make sure to designate Wayne State University as your score recipient.
