Exam scoring

Testing Office staff have returned to campus and are now available to score your in-class pencil/paper exams. We also are now able to help by setting up your paper exams in Canvas.

Scoring and exam scanning services are available to Wayne State instructors and faculty to help reduce the grading workload in larger classes. We use LERTAP and an optical recognition scanner to not only score your exams, but allow you to analyze your test to see what is working. This is a very reasonably priced service, which is funded by your department.

Make an exam scoring appointment

Faculty exams are accepted for scoring during regular office hours. Appointments are recommended for the best turnaround time and should be scheduled at least one business day in advance. To schedule an appointment, complete the form at the bottom of this page. You may also send email to scoring@wayne.edu, or call (313) 577-4706. In your appointment request, include the instructor's name, WSU email address and contact phone number, the course name and number, and your preferred appointment date and time.

Exam scoring appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. untilĀ  4:30 p.m. in half-hour time slots.

Drop off your exam

First, complete a printed copy of the Scoring Services Intake Form.

To ensure accurate processing, your completed Scoring Services Intake Form needs to be placed on top of the answer sheets to be scored. Please fill it out completely, and note any special details on the back.

Improve your test

Our staff will provide you with your test results in addition to a LERTAP report. These reports are intended to give you information about ways to improve the accuracy of your exams. In the field of testing, many statistics have been developed to help you make your test harder without making it less accurate. These statistics can help you understand which items are difficult and which are easy, so that you can assess different levels of expertise in one exam. They can also help you to fine-tune your difficult items so that they assess higher levels of skill without confusing your stronger students.

The following resources are available to help you better use these reports:

  • LERTAP Manual: Chapter 7 explains how to interpret your Lertap results.
  • LERTAP Cheat Sheet: This summarizes the key statistics included in your reports from Scoring Services.

Instructor Exam Scoring

To request an appointment, please send us your details using the form below at least one business day in advance of the expected delivery time. If you do not receive a confirmation within one business day, please call 313-577-4706.

Although exams may be delivered early, the turnaround is based on the time of the appointment, not the time of delivery. The Scoring Office recommends that you schedule your exam for a later time, rather than run the risk of delivering it late. Exams delivered more than 30 minutes late will lose their appointment.

If you have never had our office score an exam for you before, please call 313-577-4706 so that we can explain the scoring process in order for you to best utilize our services.
