Scoring and exam scanning services are available to Wayne State instructors and faculty to help reduce the grading workload in larger classes. We use LERTAP and an optical recognition scanner to not only score your exams, but allow you to analyze your test to see what is working. This is a very reasonably priced service, which is funded by your department.
Drop off your exam
Faculty exams are accepted for scoring during regular office hours. Appointments are recommended for the best turnaround time and should be scheduled at least one business day in advance. To schedule an appointment, complete the form at the bottom of this page. You may also send an email to scoring@wayne.edu, or call 313-577-4706. In your request, include the instructor's name, WSU email address and contact phone number, the course name and number, and the date and time you would like to schedule the appointment.
Exam scoring appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. in half-hour time slots. Our office is closed from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
To ensure accurate processing, the Scoring Services Intake Form is placed on top of the answer sheets which will be scored. Please fill it out completely, and note any special details on the back. You can print out the form by clicking on this link.
Improve your test
Our staff will provide you with your test results in addition to a LERTAP report. These reports are intended to give you information about ways to improve the accuracy of your exams. In the field of testing, many statistics have been developed to help you make your test harder without making it less accurate. These statistics can help you understand which items are difficult and which are easy, so that you can assess different levels of expertise in one exam. They can also help you to fine-tune your difficult items so that they assess higher levels of skill without confusing your stronger students.
The following resources are available to help you better use these reports:
- LERTAP Manual: Chapter 7 explains how to interpret your Lertap results.
- LERTAP Cheat Sheet (PDF): This summarizes the key statistics included in your reports from Scoring Services.
